Pulmonology, or the field of the lungs and respiratory system, is the study of lung function and factors that may affect it. Compromised lung function severely diminishes quality of life and is often life threatening. Several respiratory diseases have a genetic basis, including cystic fibrosis, one of the earliest genetic diseases to be diagnosed. However, there are several other disorders and pre- dispositions with a genetic basis, including COPD and asthma.
Identifying individuals with conditions and screening family members that may share the condition make it possible to perform preventive treatments and lifestyle adjustments to accommodate the needs of the patient.
